Reflexology

Reflexology has been used for several thousands of years and it is known that the Chinese and Egyptians practised it in a similar manner. These ancient forms of foot massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body. This principle, which became known as zone therapy, was further developed in the 19th century when it was discovered that applying pressure in various places in ten vertical zones the length of the body could help ease underlying problems. These ideas were further expanded when practitioners found that working with the feet was most effective as they were the most sensitive area with thousands of nerve endings

Reflexology is a natural healing art, based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands which correspond to every part of the body. By stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands, you are increasing circulation and promoting specific bodily and muscular functions. Kevin Kunz, one of the pioneers of reflexology, puts it best: "Imagine stepping on a tack. Your whole body reacts because of something perceived by the foot. Reflexology with a full range of pressure sensors, utilizes the same body system of fight or flight to relax the body." Indeed, the feet and hands are more sensitive than most people realize. Similar to how we use our eyes to detect light, the hands and feet detect pressure, stretch, movement and weight distribution.

Reflexology does not claim to be a 'cure-all' but numerous different disorders have been successfully treated by this method. These disorders include such things as migraine, sinus problems, hormonal imbalances, breathing disorders, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, tension and stress. Most people who have experienced treatment would agree that the method can be most beneficial and is also a very relaxing therapy.
