Pilates

Pilates

Around 1914, Joseph Pilates was a performer and a boxer living in England. At the outbreak of WWI, was placed under forced internment along with other German nationals in Lancaster, England. There he taught fellow camp members the concepts and exercises developed over 20 years of self-study and apprenticeship in yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman physical regimens. The Pilates Method represents a unique approach to exercise that develops body awareness, improving and changing the body's postural and alignment habits and increasing flexibility and ease of movement.

The core fundamentals of the Method are based upon a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the human body. It is an holistic approach that sets the Method apart from many other forms of exercise. Indeed, osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners are now recommending Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise today.

Pilates is a mind and body centring technique involving matwork and equipment-based exercises designed to promote core stability and re-educate postural control. The intensity of each exercise is adjusted by using differing length levers (i.e. limbs) and resistance (using Pilates equipment) and combining these with breathing control.

The eight principles of Pilates involve concentration, breathing, centring, control, precision, flowing movements, isolation and routine. The goal is to improve postural alignment and subsequently alter abnormal patterns of movement in order to achieve a carry over effect into daily function, thus reducing muscle imbalances that produce pain and over-compensation in other parts of the body.

It is beneficial for:

·                     General fitness and body awareness
·                     Pregnancy: Pre and post natal
·                     Injury prevention
·                     Remedial and rehabilitation work
·                     Improvement of technique for athletes and dancers
·                     The elderly
·                     For children from 12 years-old

 Pilates helps to:

·                     Increase and create a balance between strength and flexibility
·                     Create an awareness of and strengthen dynamic stability
·                     Improve co-ordination
·                     Release stress
·                     Improve posture
