WHAT IS BIODYNAMIC MASSAGE Biodynamic Massage is a powerful yet surprisingly gentle form of massage which emphasises and directly addresses the connection between mind and body. The mind and body are inseparably connected and our bodies respond to tension, stress, shock and frustration by holding onto these unresolved and unexpressed emotions in the muscles, connective tissues and even the skin. One of the aims of Biodynamic Massage is to work towards the ongoing process of releasing stress and tension held in the body and re-establishing a balance of energy. Biodynamic Massage emphasises rhythms and cycles of energy for example: breathing in fully and breathing out fully, working and resting, waking and sleeping. The body uses these natural rhythms to regulate itself, but sometimes gets stuck in one place in the cycle. Biodynamic Massage helps clients re-establish their own natural rhythms. BIO = LIFE DYNAMIC = FORCE How is it different from other kinds of massage? Biodynamic Massage was brought to the UK in 1968 by Gerda Boysen a Norwegian physiotherapist and psychotherapist. She believed that the alimentary canal was also a place where thoughts and feelings are digested. In a Biodynamic Massage session the therapist will often listen to the tummy rumblings or peristaltic sounds using a stethoscope which is placed on the belly. This provides valuable feedback and can indicate to the therapist that the body is indeed letting go of some of the stress remnants from old uncompleted emotional cycles and allowing the body energies to move more freely. Biodynamic Massage can be the beginning of a lifelong journey enabling you to have a better understanding of your mind body connection. This can lead to an awareness of the places where we have closed down or restricted the flow of energy and sensations in our bodies and where we can begin to digest, complete and resolve these stuck cycles and unresolved emotions to promote a better understanding of our self. It promotes deep relaxation, improves circulation and digestion, increases a sense of well being and generally improves health and vitality. It can also help with problems such as headache, insomnia, asthma, chronic fatigue and many psychological and emotional issues. A wide range of techniques is used which the therapist will select depending on individual needs at the time. Each session may feel different and the practitioner will work in close co-operation with clients, being sensitive to comments and feedback and also to non-verbal signals from the body. What to Expect Each session lasts for one hour including time at the beginning and end to discuss any ongoing issues. At the very first meeting there will be a chance to talk in confidence about yourself and your life and the issues which you would like to address. Although you may feel some benefit after one session, a sustained change will only be made possible by regular sessions over a period of weeks or months. “As an ongoing therapy, Biodynamic Massage can change your life. I don’t think that any other therapy could be so varied, so enjoyable and yet so profoundly affecting.” – Client. During the massage you may remain fully or partly clothed as you prefer. You will be kept warm and comfortable at all times and your privacy maintained throughout. No talcs or oils are used.
